Site management duties have been taken over by a sabre fencer, so lord knows what may happen as a result. Initially, he's just trying to ensure that the dates posted are relatively current. Who knows what the future may hold . . .

Baby Caswell has arrived - 11:52 pm on July 10th. 8.25 pounds, 20.5 inches long, and destined to be an epee fencer. Congratulations Joe and Amy. Unfortunatly though, this meant that they missed going with us to see "Pirates of the Caribbean". The movie was fun. Here's a photo of those who attended:

June 24, 2003
The 2002-2003 season has drawn to a close. Conejo did very well this year, right up to the last tournament where Charles earned his E03 and Mike earned his C03 in Epee... yes, Epee. As for next season, I'll be updating our copy of the schedule as dates become known. Also, I recommend that people attend the division meeting on Saturday, July 19th 1:00 pm at Los Angeles Fencing Center. This is the time and place to pull for tournaments closer to home. The address is:

             555 Riverside Drive, Suite B
             Glendale, CA 91204-1479

There will be food & drink. Tentative Agenda:
  • Election of officers
  • Slate:
    • Laura Horton, Chair
    • Derek Cotton, Vice Chair
    • Suzy Dollar, Secretary
    • Linda Dunn, Treasurer
  • Venues for next season
  • Schedule for next season
  • Division financial status report
Note that to vote one must be a member of the USFA and 18 years old or greater. Non-fencing parents, for those under 18, can vote with a Family membership (email Suzy Dollar if you need further information). You can renew your membership at the meeting. Everyone have a good summer, good luck at nationals, and I'll see you at practice.

Don't forget, All-Cals are Saturday May 31st.
I received the following note from Charles:
Adam:
Derek Cotton has opened a Fencing Salle, "L.A. Fencing Center". In Glendale. On Monday, Memorial Day, he's holding an open house to which we are all welcome. Fencing from noon three and then eating and drinking and bragging. Below is a copy of his email to me. Could you let the others in our club know in case they're interested in going? Easy directions from Ventura County:
101 E. to the 134. 134 to the 5 south. Go south on the 5 a couple of exits to Colorado Blvd. Take the Colorado exit and you'll see the second exit on Colorado is San Fernando Rd. Take that exit and bear right. At San Fernando go south (left) to the next traffic light. That's Riverdale. Turn left and just past the storage company turn left into the parking lot. About a forty minute drive from my place.
"LAFC is having and open house on Monday, May 26th. This starts at 12:00 PM, with free fencing for anyone who would like to, which will last until 3:00 PM. After that we will have a BBQ, with everything wrapping up around 6:00PM. You will need to bring whatever you want to eat and we will cook it for you, and whatever you would like to drink. LAFC members, we need people to bring grills, and a couple of coolers. LAFC located at 555 Riverdale, Unit B, Glendale, CA. Phone number is 213 216 0682 Bring you stuff and something to eat. Hope to see you there."

The Linkmeyer photos are up! Check 'em out. In other news, you may have noticed a flury of PCC and Nationals qualifier tournaments over the last month or two. Conejo did fairly well this year, including qualifying our men's foil team to go to PCCs. We also had several fencers qualify for individual events at PCC and at Nationals.

There are still 3 more big USFA events in the local division this season, including the Man In The Iron Mask tournament to be held at Chaminade on April 27. This event will include two unusual (non-USFA) events: One-Touch Epee and Pairs Foil. The one-touch event has become a tradition for the Iron Mask, but the Pairs Foil is new. I asked Ethan for a description:

Pairs foil is a two person foil event. Any two people can be on a team (Male & Female, Male & Male, Female & Female, Veteran to Y10 & Vetran to Y10) One fencer from each team will fence to five. Then the other fencer from each team will build on those scores to get to ten. This will give fencers the ability to fence with their friends, siblings, children, parents, etc., regardless of their ability, and still have a decent chance to do well. (example: I want to fence with my best friend who has just started fencing. Even if he gets no points, I can still win for my team if I can get 10 points before my opponent gets 5 points.
The other two events (May 4 & June 8) are either going to be 3 weapon opens at a location yet to be determined, or something less than a 3 weapon open held at Victory Park. Please check the schedule for updates.

Also, for those of you who didn't hear: Drew has changed his name to "Killer" after a little incident at a junior's event last month. Please keep this in mind next time you see him.

Ok, so I'm a slacker and I haven't posted the photos from Linkmer yet. Then again, neither have the folks at USC. A few weeks ago several of us attended an event in Long Beach, where we witnessed Joe C. renewing his "A" in Epee. We also had a good showing at the Div II qualifiers last weekend. It was a fun (although rushed) event. Please note that the So-Cal schedule has changed, I've posted the latest version on our site, but you probably should use the division's version in case I made a mistake. Soon to come: More photos of our club's history! Dave V. picked up a couple pictures of Duris on e-bay, which Mike has scanned for us. When I post those, I'll also try to post the other photos I have piling up.

Some of you may be interested in the upcoming 3rd Annual Michael D'Asaro Memorial Foil Tournament, scheduled for March 12th at Westside. This event is in memory of the late Coach D'Asaro. Several of our club members were students of his, and I believe I speak for all of us when I say that he is missed.

In other news, Coach Al Carter is now holding 2 hour intensive group training sessions at SwordPlay on the occasional Saturday. If you are interested, check with Coach Carter for details.

The results from the USC Linkmeyer Invitational are up. There was a respectable Conejo turn out: Mike (9th), Charles, and I (11th) all fenced in the open foil. Joe C. (7th), Paul (10th), and I fenced in the open Epee. Yukari (14th) fenced in the open sabre. Laura was busy running the event, but she had her brother AJ running amok with 2 digital cameras, so I hope to get some photos up here. I'm also hoping to get a hold of Charle's photo of the flying Ken Chilton landing his la-belle touche on Robbie Carillo from the foil gold medal bout.

I assume everyone got the Titan Games postcard. According to their web site there will be 6 US Fencers competing, and there will be two segments on ESPN 2 on March 29, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. (EST), and March 30, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. (EST). Hopefully we'll see some televised Fencing.

Well, I'm back from Duel. Paul competed in Epee (68th), I competed in Foil (64th), and Laura competed in Women's Sabre (13th). Thanks Mrs. Chandler for being the club cheering section. Amy at Tiger Mountain Photo promised me she would post some photo's from the event on their site, plus I hope to eventually post some here. (Paul, Laura... send me photos!). Sam still hasn't posted the winter schedule, but rumor has it that Quals for Summer Nationals will be in March. Note that I've added the Linkmeyer and UCSB All-Cal to the schedule.
December 8, 2002
We are half-way through the season and our club has been competing well. Congratulations to both Paul and Drew for qualifying to go to the JOs! Also, both Dan and Laura now have E02 ratings in Sabre! There will be a class starting in January, you can register online after December 10th.
Enjoy the Holidays, I'll see you all at Duel!
October 14, 2002
Congrats to Laura and Yukari who dominated yesterday's open Sabre. They took first and second place! I wasn't there, so I don't know the details, but the results will eventually be posted on the SoCal web site. If anyone wants to contribute early event results or other news, email me at webmaster@conejofencing.com.
Oh, and I've posted some photos from the September 29th meet, and I've begun work on a "history" of the club. Please submit your input (and photos) for this!
October 2, 2002
Congrats to every one who went to last weekend's events in Pasadena. The results have not been posted yet, but Paul won the Under 18 epee, and came in 3rd in the open epee. That makes him a "B02" now. Nice! Also fencing from our club were Adam, Charles, Dwayne, Joe S., Laura, and Mike. I have some photos of the final epee and foil bouts, which I might post.
August 26, 2002
The Schedule is up for 2002-2003!

The Aug 24th BBQ was a success despite the FAILURE of ANYONE from CALTECH to show up. Photos will be posted soon. Thanks Laura for organizing it!

Photos are now up from our July Geology trip! Check them out. I'll add more eventually.
